Starting a psychological health and safety program does not need to be difficult. In the May 20, 2024 episode of the Psych Health and Safety Canada Podcast I talked with organizational consultants Kate Toth and Kyle Armstrong and one of their clients, Kristine Parsons. What did they say in this episode?
- They measured baseline staff wellbeing, organizational culture as leading indicators to staff burnout, self-rated staff performance, and turnover.
- Together with staff, they looked at their problem areas and took action.
- They engaged in continual review and over the course of 2 years saw statistically significant reductions in burnout and turnover, and increases in performance and culture. Their rate of burnout declined from being equal to the average in Canadian childcare centres to being half that rate!
Workplace conditions are co-created. It is not just expecting management to be different or employees to be different. Changing the way we do work requires change from both. But management needs to take the lead and responsibility for change. Every workplace will need its own plan because each workplace is unique. Please have a listen to be inspired!
